10 Ways to stop me visiting your church

Tony Morgan's listed ten ways to stop him visiting your church - because he visited your website. You can read his blog post here.

His list of ten?

  1. Avoid telling me what's going to happen at your church this weekend
  2. Put a picture of your building on the main page
  3. Use lots of purple and pink and add pictures of flowers
  4. Make me click a "skip intro" or "enter site" link
  5. Add as many pictures and graphics as you can to the main page
  6. Use amateur photography
  7. List every single ministry you have at your church
  8. Make it as difficult as possible for me to get directions, services times, or find information about what will happen with my kids
  9. Put a picture of your pastor with his wife on the main page
  10. Try to sell your church rather than telling me how I will benefit from the experience

What do you think?

I thought another great turn-off for church web sites is news that's outdated, preferably by several months just to show that no-one cares! (Of course, that's difficult to achieve with ChurchInsight where you can set expire dates for articles and the calendar gets updated automatically...)

I wasn't part of this discussion, and it's 8 months later, but www.fairfaxcommunity.net is a pretty good example of a good church website.

How can YOU benefit from the experience??? I think that's a large part of your problem! Daycares, socials, dinners, coffee groups etc. aside, the reason to go to church is to worship God! It's all about what YOU can do for the CHURCH!!! DUDE!!!!!!!!

I agree, Justin, www.fairfaxcommunity.net is a great site. Did you have anything to do with it per chance?

Hi, im Mark and I guess im introducing myself!!

I came across this site using 'stumble' (Firefox) and thought all the ideas floating around here seem really interesting! (Although I don't seem to agree with everything lol)

Well, thats me !

My turn-offs?
* Fonts too small for an older person to read.
* Dead links.
* (and as someone has already mentioned, non-updated calendars).
My turn-ons?
* An effective and easy-to-use blend of technology with art. I was impressed with Fairfax's site too.

The Fair Fax site is good, but that 3d menu widget thing on the left is no use, it doesnt clearly identify what each item is, and some of the links dont even work!

you can add..announcing you aregoing to make announcements on the web site then not announce anything...I dont agree with not putting the picture of the building or the pastor and wife I think that they are important i.e I dont like old buildings they make me cough and some folks need to know about steps doorways where to anchor a bike..ever tried that? You end up manacled to a dodgy drainpipe next person knocks into it witht heir BMW the pipe is hanging off the wall and possibly worse!

With such a critical spirit... I wouldn't want him to visit my church with a heart like that....

I've attended church three times and still haven't been really welcomed by anyone except the greeter.I went forward for prayer, again no response towards me. I came here from a Pentecostal Church, and if you went forward for alter call you were really touched and prayed for. Is this Church just too large to expect much?
Getalife (Guest)15/09/2008, 11:58
Wow, Lynn, I hope that wasn't my church you went to!

I do think churches should pay some attention to organisation, especially if they're quite big as new faces can so easily get lost in the crowd. I think we sometimes forget that some people just come through the door and aren't brought by people who already 'know' them.
